A Deeper Dive
If you are feeling anxious, uptight and/or experiencing people starting to go a bit crazy, you are just experiencing what happens when humans are affected by the increasingly fearful circumstances of an uncertain future.
Behaviors and issues that arise from dysfunctional systems have similar themes and will negatively impact you on a personal level; your relationships, family dynamics, communities, the workplace – these systems will all be affected. Dysfunctional patterns find their way into most interpersonal relationships and create toxic environments, so individuals act out these roles and patterns, as that is what they know. Even worse, they get a payoff for their dysfunctional and problematic behaviors. Think of the reality show, Survivor.
Many people are pro-active and attend ‘learn and grow’ activities. If you have attended various trainings, workshops, marriage counseling or therapy sessions, then there is an intention to get better at navigating life. I found that most people (and at times myself) only get pro-active and engage in growth work if the pain gets too great; emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual. We get depressed, isolate ourselves or self-medicate to avoid dealing with painful emotions. Denial and rigid behavioral patterns are what we fall back on. A familiar definition of insanity is ‘doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result’. The times we are facing will not get better in the near future and requires support and skillfulness.
The ‘training and waning’ effect can contribute to lost progress, especially if you don’t stay consistent in practicing your new skills. It’s especially difficult if your support system lacks the same awareness and skills to practice and hold you accountable. Problematic and unproductive patterns re-emerge back to ‘protect and defend’ mode as the new awarenesses and skills from ‘learn and grow’ can fade or disappear.
To make better choices, old and unworkable patterns need to be dealt with. If you have gotten stressed out and are increasingly having to run into ‘more Karens and Kevins’; YOU could use a positive, yet honest feedback coach to cope. I will provide a non-judgmental, ‘safe space’ where we can explore what exercises will maintain skillfulness and what triggers your automatic, negative behaviors. I will provide guidance, support, and the strategies that fit your ‘readiness’ for better coping skills to make better choices going forward.
Emotional Intelligence isn’t a quick fix but if you focus on this work by practicing the skills with a seasoned coach, you will spread your centeredness and have better self-regulation. The best quick fix is to control your reactions to what is happening. I’ve been there and have lived enough years to gain experience and try on what works. My intention is to understand the issues you are dealing with that is causing you pain. I am someone ‘who’s been there’ and have tried a lot of strategies to cope, some successful and some problematic. I’ll provide feedback and then point you to options that you can explore and waste less time repeating unproductive patterns.
